Countries That Are Eligible to Apply: Permanent Residents of Canada, Citizens of Canada, and Citizens of Other Countries
You should be working towards earning your first doctorate degree (including participating in a dual undergraduate/graduate research program such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD – if it includes a documented and substantial research component). It is important to keep in mind that only the PhD component of a combined degree may qualify for financing;
As of the first of May in the year 2023, you should not have completed more than 20 months of PhD study.
You should only be nominated for this award by one Canadian organization, and that organization’s Vanier CGS quota must already be filled.
You should have the intention of beginning full-time doctorate (or a dual graduate program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) study and research at the nominated institution either during the summer semester or during the academic year that immediately follows the release of the results; It is important to keep in mind that only the PhD component of a combined degree may qualify for financing;
In order to pursue or finish a doctorate degree, you are not permitted to now have or have previously had a scholarship or fellowship at the doctoral level from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
It is required that you have earned a grade point average of at least 4.0 in each of the most recent two years of full-time study or the equivalent, as assessed by your educational institution. How to Apply for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
Steps to Be Completed in an Application Applications may be started in one of two different ways. Either the student notifies the faculty of graduate studies at the chosen institution of their intention to apply to the Vanier CGS program, OR the institution commences the nomination procedure by contacting the applicant that was picked as the preferred candidate.
The student is responsible for preparing the application and submitting it to the nominating university by the internal deadline (which is specified in Researched by the nominating school) via the Researched application system.
The internal candidate selection procedure
is carried out by the entity that is doing the nomination.
By November 1st, 2022, the institution that is doing the nominating will have sent their suggested nominees to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat

The process of reviewing is coordinated by the Secretariat.
The suggestions are presented to the Tri-Agency Programs (TAP) Steering Committee by the Secretariat.
The TAP Steering Committee is responsible for endorsing and giving its approval to all of the program’s final decisions.
The results of the competition are communicated to the applicants who have been nominated in April 2023.
Candidates are required to get a nomination from the educational establishment that they want to attend. In order to be eligible for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS), candidates cannot submit their applications directly to the program
